Episode #40 -
Can you change active Facebook ads without messing anything up?
Over the last few years that Facebook ads have been around there seems to be this fear (borderline paranoia) about upsetting the algorithm by changing a running ad.
On this episode, I’m covering what you can change, what you can’t and some best practices for when you need to make a change but don’t want to screw anything up.
Some basic rules of thumb are:
You can change anything in the creative - however, I prefer to duplicate the ad, leaving it in the same campaign and ad set.
You cannot change the campaign objective. Even if you want to Facebook won’t let you. So you can’t go from a traffic campaign to a conversion campaign.
You can change the budget (but don’t change it too much - 50% max)
You can change the end date if you selected an end date from the beginning.
Can you change the targeting? Technically yes.
However, when you change the targeting you are telling Facebook “Hey, originally I wanted to target these particular people or interests but now I want to target these instead.”
As a result, Facebook will then need to go back to the drawing board and figure out exactly what you’re looking for.
Instead, duplicate your ad set and make the changes. Then shut off the original one.
